What is tire inspection?

Tires are the only part of your car that touches the road, and they tend to go off slowly enough that you do not notice.

An inspection measures tread depth at several points across each tire, looks for cuts, bulges, cracking and embedded objects, checks the pressures, and reads the wear pattern. That pattern is genuinely useful information: wear down the middle usually means overinflation, wear on both edges means underinflation, and wear on one edge often points to alignment.

You get a straight answer about how much life is left and what, if anything, needs doing.

What we do

  • Measure tread depth at the inner, centre and outer positions on each tire
  • Check for cuts, bulges, cracking and embedded objects
  • Read the wear pattern and explain what is causing it
  • Check and correct tire pressures
  • Inspect the sidewalls and the valve stems
  • Check the age of the tires from the DOT date code
  • Give you a clear summary of what we found

When do you need this service?

  • Before a long trip
  • Twice a year, and before winter in particular
  • When you notice a change in handling or noise
  • After hitting a pothole or kerb hard
  • When you are not sure whether tires need replacing
  • When buying a used car

How it works

  1. Walk round We look over all four tires and the spare if you have one.
  2. Measure Tread depth is measured at several points per tire.
  3. Inspect Sidewalls, tread and valve stems are checked for damage.
  4. Pressure Inflation is checked and corrected against the door placard.
  5. Report We talk you through what we found and what it means.

Important information

An inspection tells you the condition of your tires today. It is not a guarantee against future damage - a nail picked up tomorrow is still a nail. Tread below 2/32 of an inch is legally worn out in most states, but wet grip falls off well before that, so we will usually flag a tire as worth planning to replace before it reaches the limit.

Frequently asked questions

Is the inspection really free?

Yes. There is no charge and no obligation to have any work done.

How long does it take?

About 20 minutes.

When should I replace my tires?

Most states treat 2/32 of an inch of tread as the legal minimum, but wet braking gets noticeably worse below about 4/32. Age matters too - many manufacturers suggest replacing tires over ten years old regardless of tread.

What does the wear pattern tell you?

A lot. Wear in the centre suggests overinflation, wear at both edges suggests underinflation, and wear on one edge or in patches points to alignment or balance. We will show you on the tire.
