Tire Pressure Check

Underinflated tires wear faster, use more fuel and handle worse. Getting them right takes minutes.

What is tire pressure check?

Tires lose about one psi a month on their own, and more when the weather turns cold. A tire can be twenty percent low and still look completely normal from the outside.

Running underinflated makes the tire flex more than it was designed to, which builds heat, wears the shoulders and costs you fuel. Overinflation is not the answer either - it wears the centre of the tread and gives a harsher ride.

The correct figure is on the placard inside your driver's door, not the number moulded into the tire sidewall. That sidewall figure is the tire's maximum, not your vehicle's recommendation.

What we do

  • Read the recommended pressures from your vehicle's door placard
  • Check all four tires with a calibrated gauge
  • Check the spare where the vehicle carries one
  • Adjust each tire to the correct pressure
  • Inspect the valve stems and caps
  • Reset the tire pressure monitoring system if the warning light is on

When do you need this service?

  • Monthly, as routine maintenance
  • When the tire pressure warning light comes on
  • At the first real cold snap of the season
  • Before a long drive or towing
  • When the car feels heavy in the steering

How it works

  1. Placard We read the correct pressures for your specific vehicle.
  2. Measure Each tire is checked cold with a calibrated gauge.
  3. Adjust Pressures are set to the manufacturer's figures.
  4. Valves Stems and caps are checked for leaks and damage.
  5. Reset The TPMS is reset where the warning light needs clearing.

Important information

Pressure should be checked when the tires are cold - driving heats the air inside and raises the reading. If a tire keeps losing pressure after being set correctly, it has a leak, and topping it up is not a fix. Book a flat tire repair so we can find it.

Frequently asked questions

What pressure should my tires be?

The figure on the placard inside your driver's door, not the number on the tire sidewall. The sidewall shows the tire's maximum pressure, which is usually higher than your vehicle needs.

How often should I check?

Once a month, and again whenever the temperature drops sharply. Tires lose roughly one psi for every ten degrees Fahrenheit the temperature falls.

My warning light came on in cold weather. Is something wrong?

Often it is just the cold reducing the pressure. Have it checked and set - if the light returns after that, there is a leak or a sensor fault worth looking at.

Is nitrogen worth it?

Nitrogen leaks out slightly more slowly than air and is less affected by temperature, but a tire filled with ordinary air and checked monthly performs just as well.
