TPMS Diagnosis

That light means something. We find out whether it is a soft tire, a dead sensor or a system fault - and tell you what it needs.

What is tpms diagnosis?

The tire pressure monitoring system watches the pressure in each tire and warns you when one drops too low. When the light comes on, there are three broad possibilities: a tire really is low, a sensor has failed, or the system needs relearning after work was done.

Guessing between them wastes money. We read the system with a TPMS tool, check the actual pressures against what the sensors are reporting, and identify which sensor is at fault if any.

A steady light usually means low pressure. A light that flashes for a minute or so on startup and then stays on usually means the system itself has a fault - and that is worth knowing, because the car is no longer warning you about pressure at all.

What we do

  • Read the system with a TPMS diagnostic tool
  • Check each sensor's reported pressure and battery status
  • Measure actual pressures with a calibrated gauge and compare
  • Identify which sensor is failing, if any
  • Check for a simple relearn requirement after recent tire work
  • Set pressures correctly and clear the light where that resolves it
  • Explain what is needed if a sensor has to be replaced

When do you need this service?

  • The tire pressure warning light is on
  • The light flashes on startup then stays lit
  • The light returns shortly after you set the pressures
  • The dashboard shows a pressure for one tire that looks wrong
  • You have just had tires or wheels changed

How it works

  1. Read A TPMS tool reads what each sensor is reporting.
  2. Compare Reported pressures are checked against a calibrated gauge.
  3. Identify We isolate a low tire, a failing sensor or a relearn need.
  4. Correct Pressures are set and the system relearned where that fixes it.
  5. Explain If a sensor needs replacing, we tell you what is involved.

Important information

A flashing TPMS light on startup means the system has a fault, not that a tire is low - while it is flashing, your car is not monitoring pressure at all, so check pressures manually until it is fixed. TPMS sensors contain a sealed battery that typically lasts five to ten years and cannot be replaced on its own; when it dies, the sensor is replaced. We do not currently fit replacement sensors - we will diagnose the fault and tell you exactly what is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my TPMS light on?

Most often one tire is genuinely low. It can also mean a sensor has failed, or that the system needs relearning after tire work. A diagnosis tells you which.

What is the difference between a steady light and a flashing one?

A steady light means low pressure in at least one tire. A light that flashes for about a minute at startup and then stays on means the system itself has a fault.

How long do TPMS sensors last?

The sealed battery inside typically lasts five to ten years. The battery cannot be changed separately, so a flat one means a new sensor.

Can I just ignore the light?

We would not. With the light on you have lost the early warning of a soft tire, and driving underinflated is how tires overheat and fail. It also fails inspection in many states.
