Bolt patterns and why they must match

A wheel either matches your hub exactly or it does not fit. There is no close enough.

A bolt pattern is written as the number of studs and the diameter of the circle they sit on, for example 5x114.3 - five studs on a 114.3 mm circle.

Patterns that look similar are not interchangeable. 5x114.3 and 5x120 are only a few millimetres apart, and forcing a mismatched wheel on stresses the studs and can let the wheel work loose.

If you buy wheels separately, confirm the bolt pattern, centre bore, offset and the correct lug nut seat type - conical, ball or flat. The seat shape must match the wheel or the nuts will not clamp properly.

Re-torque new wheels after about 50 to 100 miles. Fasteners bed in, and this one check prevents the most common cause of a wheel coming loose.
